Carmelo Riley, Brian Smith II, and Tyrell Yates Obituary, Southeastern Louisiana University Mourns Three Students Killed in Ponchatoula Crash
PONCHATOULA, LA — A profound sense of grief has settled over the Southeastern Louisiana University (SELU) community following a devastating single-vehicle accident early Monday morning that claimed the lives of three students.
The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office has officially identified the victims as Carmelo Riley, Brian Smith II, and Tyrell Yates. The tragedy occurred around 3:30 a.m. along US 51, leaving the campus and the surrounding community in a state of shock.
According to reports from the Louisiana State Police, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and struck a concrete support column located on the left side of the roadway. The impact was fatal for all three occupants.
Among the lives lost is Tyrell Yates, a former member of the Southeastern basketball team. Yates’ connection to the university’s athletic program has added an extra layer of heartbreak for student-athletes and alumni alike, who remember him as a vital part of the Lion community.
In the wake of the accident, SELU President William S. Wainwright issued a heartfelt statement expressing the university’s collective devastation.
“There are simply no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for their families, friends, classmates, faculty and all those whose lives they touched,” President Wainwright said. “On behalf of our entire university community, I extend our deepest condolences to their families during this incredibly difficult time. I ask that we come together as a Southeastern Family and keep them, and all those who loved these students, in our thoughts and prayers.”
