Brian Liles, 44yrs CHP Motorcycle Officer Killed in Line-of-Duty Crash in Central Valley
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is mourning the profound loss of one of its own following a tragic accident in the Central Valley on Monday. Officer Brian Liles, a 44-year-old motorcycle officer, was killed while on duty, marking the first on-duty death for the agency since 2020.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:11 p.m. on Highway 99, north of Highway 190 in Tipton. According to official CHP reports, Liles was involved in a crash that resulted in critical injuries. Despite the immediate and strenuous efforts of first responders to provide emergency medical treatment at the scene, Officer Liles was tragically pronounced dead.
Liles was a veteran of the force, having dedicated more than 16 years to public service. A 2010 graduate of the CHP Academy, his career spanned several vital regions of the state. He began his service in the San Jose area before transferring to Hayward and later Fresno. In 2019, he was assigned to the Visalia area, where he served with distinction.
The news of his passing has sent waves of grief through the law enforcement community and the state. In an official statement, the CHP expressed their heartbreak, noting, “His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.”
Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement honoring Liles’ legacy, calling his death a “heartbreaking loss for the California Highway Patrol and the entire state.” Newsom extended his heartfelt condolences to Liles’ family, stating, “He will be remembered for his dedication to serving and protecting the people of California.”
Officer Liles is survived by his wife, his two children, his parents, and two sisters. As a mark of respect for his sacrifice and service, flags will be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and the Capitol Annex Swing Space. The community continues to stand in solidarity with the Liles family and the CHP during this period of immense mourning.
